Three from Poplar

Barley Mow Estate
Two double 14 story blocks and two low rise linked multi blocks.
1960's photos show a much darker render other than the off white render seen today.

Idea Store

Although it sounds like it should have a Chillax zone and smoothie bar, it's actually a library. And, by all reports, David Adjaye's foray into public service space is a popular success.

Robin Hood Gardens

No doubt the most famous piece of Brutalism, let alone architecture in the east end of London. In the flesh it feels much older than 40 years old - and despite being under a City Airport flight path, next to the Blackwall Tunnel approach - it has a loveable flawed charm that no doubt most people who don't live in a Brutalist building feel for maligned Brutalist buildings

clip stamp fold exhibition

The event has finished but the site has some fantastic titles:

‘An explosion of architectural little magazines in the 1960s and 1970s instigated a radical transformation in architectural culture with the architecture of the magazines acting as the site of innovation and debate. Clip/Stamp/Fold: The Radical Architecture of Little Magazines 196X - 197X takes stock of seventy little magazines from this period, which were published in over a dozen cities.’

Another, ahem, corker from Denton Corker Marshall. I've bet they've heard that as many times as 'can you build me an elongated rectangular prism with a massive cantilever'.

Ilmari Tapiovaara

When your CV shows you worked with Aalto in London, Corbusier in Paris and Mies van de Rohe in Chicago, do you need to know more? How about gold medals for his chairs at the Milan Triennials in 1951, 1954, 1957 and 1960.

VILLA, CHABREY

"This low-lying, expansive house in Chabrey encompasses two bedrooms, a garage and an indoor pool in a single volume. Reminiscent of an agricultural building or a hangar, its material simplicity allows it to blend into the rural landscape. The external walls and roof are clad in thin slats of wood, and the roof oversails the walls to create a covered walkway."
